Agenda
- Date
- Paul turns 32 on 9/22
- Paul in SF Oct 15th - 19th (+1 week on either end)
- Length of event: 2 formats
- Format 1
- 9am: Pitches or Presentations--where dev evangelists seed ideas
- Hackertime until lunch--in teams
- 6pm Presentations
- Format 2
- 48 hour marathon
- ie Music Hack Day
- People are motivated by $ to work like insane monkeys
- Suggested format: Social Event the night before
- Next step:
- VMG checks with MIT to see what weekend days are available (preference for Saturday)
- VMG checking 8/10
- Decide on a format
- Learning Goals
- 2 things:
- Content
- Generation
- Curation
- Discovery
- Crash course in audio engineers pieces
- Folks using the API
- Marketing: interested in making apps that promote storytelling?
- Next step: VMG sends learning activities: by Friday
- Options for social and anti-social
- Emphasis on content
- Plan for co-creation of content b/w hackers and storytellers
- Theme and tagline
- What is each party getting out it?
- Ego draw & show off--is that relevant here
- Social
- Work
- Learning
- Align interests
- Digital storytelling/transmedia-->big buzzword but what tools are out there
- Hackday?
- Pros: it's about making something, it's about a team
- Con: drive away non-technical people
- Other alternatives:
- Conference
- Festival
- Something akin to a marathon: story-athon (like a dance-a-thon), storyfest
- Streaming--streaming stories streaming audio (but it's one-way)
- Capturing sound scapes--audioscapes, audio festival
- http://thirdcoastfestival.org/
- Audio hacking--explore new ways of audio creation, audio delivery, soundhacking
- What sound does audiohacking make? Maybe that's the term for the event--a click, a crash, a beep, smash
- Next step here:
- Brainstorm: what sound audiohacking makes
- But we like subtitle as audio hack day!
- Overall: making apps that promote storytelling & finding our perfect marketing storm
- Budget
- Venue is free [VMG checks]
- Food & booze--main expenses
- Breakfast and coffee
- Lunch
- Dinner [optional]
- Social thing the night before
- T-shirt [freaks VMG out!]
- Good illustrator volunteer
- Showcase your project--feature it on SoundCloud
- Creation is its own reward--wrap up of projects, a lot more people show up for demos than anything else
- Invite press
- Creation is its own reward
- Sharing is incentive for getting it done
- Some tech journalists?
- Next step here:
- VMG passes along a list of favored caterers
- Basil Tree (I think we've had the kabobs at previous meetups you've attended and they deliver on Saturdays which is a big plus for us): http://www.basiltree.com/
- Milk Street (I personally like their fajitas)" http://www.milkstreetcafe.com/
- VMG checking 8/10
- Budgets are for Paul
- Outreach plan
- Aim for 50/50 hackers
- Goal: technology-interested storytellers and hackers who love stories=perfect storm
- Next step:
- Paul brainstorms and passes along for feedback by Friday
Learning Goals
(post these to P2PU--folks can post their final projects there and pictures from the day)
Recent Projects and Snazzy Features
Outreach:
Learning Activities
Icebreaker
- Idea 1:
- Speed-dating: why you are here and what you want out of the day
- Switch every minute
- Sets a goal for the day
- Prompts exposure from developers to fellow storytellers
- Idea 2:
- Storytelling icebreaker: How Did You Get Here?
- Switch every minute
- Prompts an evolving story from person to person, and will change from interaction to interaction
Thematic Areas:
- Listen
- Play
- Discover
- Make
- Remember
- Critique/Studio
The day will have 2 blocks--you can choose one thematic area per block
Listen
- The Perfect Interview
- In teams (1 developer & 1 storyteller) we set them up with an interview of an interesting person.
- Come up with questions to ask them without knowing who they are.
- Either skype or call with recording on iphone
- Mashup the interview with 10 sounds you found on soundcloud
Play
- Sonic Win: Games based on sounds
- What are some of your favorite games--board, card, otherwise?
- What would they look like if sound were front and center instead of soundtrack?
- Games where sound is the input, and response
- Game development idea generation:
- Use "Grow a Game" card set to develop a game story around sounds: http://www.tiltfactor.org/grow-a-game
- (Could also use Apples to Apples, Cards Against Humanitiy (http://cardsagainsthumanity.com )
- Prototype the game and record sounds
- Program the game--What digital tools/platforms can we use for this? I can think of a Scratch hack, gamestar mechanic, but will developers take that seriously?
Make
- The Web is an Amp
- Brainstorm: what are 2 places on the web that are too quiet?
- ie: flipboard, message boards, twitter, flickr
- Bring 2 of them together in an application that is supplemented by sound
- Constraint: you must embarrass yourself at least once
Discover
- Heartbeat of MIT
- In groups of 2 or 3, go around the Media Lab and find interesting sounds
- We'll ask Center for Civic Media and Fab Lab to remain open and let people in
- Use iphones to record sounds
- Develop a character or a story around the soundscape of MIT Media Lab
Remember
- Storyslam
- "It literally happened" or "On the Streetcorner"
- You have 15 minutes to remember and write down a story with those themes
- Tell it to your neighbor, switch, retell it to your neighbor
- Find 10 sounds on SoundCloud and weave together a story using images or maps
- 1 hour in--present to the smaller group for critique & technical help
- Final: present your story to the small group
Critique/Studio (ongoing throughout the day)
- Folks from any area are encouraged to come throughout the day and sign up
- They can demo their project--in whatever state--to a small crew of experts (like Paul and Brendan, and anyone else who is in the room) and get feedback from them
- But folks have to signup and wait their turn at the whiteboard
