Agenda
Core of the call. Focused on four types of conversations (invited guests, challenges you need help with, proposals you want feedback on, ideas you need collaborators for).
- Add your agenda items here. Provide a link to background materials you want the community to review prior to the call.
- Celebrity Challenges: http://pad.p2pu.org/celebrity-challenges (Members from the community develop exciting challenges endorsed or designed by notable figures for April 18 media sweep)
- People in our community have connections, and it would be great if people could reach out to (take advantage/manipulate) their contacts to either help out on, or at the least, endorse a challenge.
- All the action is taking place on the etherpad (link above
- Stake your claim
- Final Challenges due April 11
- Programming 101 challenge:
- confirmed is listed on the learn page
- has anyone tried it? you can see from participants.
- how can we promote it a bit more? (it could use some improvements like some simplifications, images - but hard to know if people are even trying it or not?).
- do we want more along those veins if it's not being picked up?
- John -> working on a google adwords campaign, can add it there, and on the featured course page on the webcraft front page
- Chloe -> as people create more and more challenges we need to help them promote them
- I nominate Vanessa to try it and give feedback.
- Promotion (of P2PU in general)
- badges - best process to propose some?
- Specifically for open science ones
- but what is the process in general?
- Users can send ideas to Chloe & Zuzel, and they will help (this is not super sustainable, but what we have for now)
- People have being also using the badge challenges party to get feedback about their badges
- Also there is this one Jessy > http://p2pu.org/en/groups/make-a-challenge/
- highjacking this item >> P2PU-wide community badges survey is out > go answer it! https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/WWTCXV3
- this will work for general badges that can by applied to all courses challenges or to a Set of Challenges (you would send the survey to that group)
- Survey
- Philipp -> question: is this the best way to figure out what people want? Or would it make sense to work with a smaller group of people and see what other orgs have done with badges before we go so broad?
- Do we know enough about what we're doing yet to try this process?
- Chloe -> We have been studying badges across sites as well as accessing the work that mozilla has done on web literacy
- Decision was to send survey to the community so that we could get the most objective response
- Concern that if we do more research it might delay the survey, or we go ahead and launch community-wide badges without the feedback from the community.
- Philipp -> people aren't very good at knowing what they want, so we need to have a look at what they're using, maybe see what people are using, ask what their experience has been, and use this information to inform our process
- Chloe -> If we look at what people are using, then we risk deciding for them which badges should be community-wide or not by including them or not in the survey
- Zuzel -> I think we shouldn't delay the launch of global community badges until we get feedback from our user base but start with a small set and them add to that when we get feedback. Including a few badges globally on the site is also a way to make our users familiar with the use of badges
- Philipp -> We should survey people who have recieved badges, people who have given badges, and people who might have been eligible but didn't do so.
- We might get more good stuff from people who are on the list who aren't super-involved but who have offered good ideas and are P2pU users.
- NEXT STEPS:
- chloe send survey link to community, philipp and chloe talk, possibly send to all users after that.
- Google Adwords update for the month of February
- we were given a grant from Google for 10k worth of adwords
- For the month of Feb we spent a little more than 7k on ads, and we've had about 10.5 thousand unique users come to the site
- Majority of the ad copy is about taking free courses online, but as we refine and tweak these and make them more course-specific this may or may not change
- Piwik analytics might help with the conversion tracking.
General discussion and questions
- Facebook: Find an avid FB'er to generate a good P2PU presence there?
- We have facebook, but we under-utilise it
- There are probably a lot of opinions about FB in the community
- But are there any people in this group / on this call who use it
- John ~ 20-50 new likes a week
