General point of view on outstanding issues

Other business

Andrew Black
- maturity of courses
- expected? to be given material, assignments, etc.
- online chats - that don't happen.
- special needs aspects
- Open Layers course - http://p2pu.org/webcraft/online-maps-openlayers
: Some people like playing with toys, for others they get in the way (cf. Dan)
: "If people have shared interests, they will find a way to work together"
: Personal contact helps -- but different people match different technologies better for subjective reasons.
Presenting material http://p2pu.org/webcraft/node/12927/document/26306
: Making the material readable! - is this a question for the organiser or for the platform?
-- a little markup might go a long ways towards making the pages more readable:
     Cf. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JavaScript#Use_in_web_pages  http://bonsaiden.github.com/JavaScript-Garden/
: (It's also possible to get lost on the homepage.)
Size of course - I feel group is too large to build up relationships
Accessibility: jauncourt@gmail.com http://p2pu.org/users/jessica bryangould@gmail.com http://p2pu.org/node/5689 http://p2pu.org/general/node/5631/document/6527
: "What makes you tick?" - P2PU should have support for different modes of engagements

Tools vs Best practices for choosing tools -- these are two very different things

Personal preferences -- put this into user page?  How to discover people with common interests?  Resources that are suitable to one's interest! -- this could be very useful. http://p2pu.lighthouseapp.com/projects/71002-lernanta/tickets/3-discover-other-peoples-preferences

In-person meetings: P2PUK meetups will continue, maybe courses with in-person aspects?  Joe would like to visit the Hackspace.

Joe Corneli (http://planetmath.org and http://trac.mathweb.org/planetary etc):
 - Report back on Q1 2011 courses and plans for Q2
 - Look at Dan's stats stuff
 - Planning PlanetMath stuff (is it reasonable to connect to P2PU?) - look at proposal I drafted SoMF
 - draft of workshop idea for "LICE" http://metameso.org/~joe/lice.pdf

 >>>> http://pad.p2pu.org/london-meeting-lice  >>>  Action will take place centred here over the next few days.

 - paragogy: useful to share with Allison? regarding course design handbook - http://en.wikiversity.org/wiki/User:Arided/ImplementingParagogy

PS@JC: Turn into a project e.g. about Alison's radical pedagogy?
barrier to entry is currently too high for lots of people: what if a course consist of a set of modules?
E.g. what are the key readings to be aware of for paragogy?  What are key questions or exercises?  Many people could come up with answers.

We have Courses about peer learning: e.g. Collaborative Lesson Planning, Open Governance and Learning

 - high level vision of what p2pu is... where is it (what are the elements that that complement the idea "if people want to get stuff done, then it will get done" -- which represents a sort of US-Republican model). -- Points of contact?  (Should the form continue to just to to Bekka? Probably, but something to consider.)

 - where do I go to do X?  (e.g. to create the view on things that I want, whether it is "the new homepage" per se or not.)

Tagging for Etherpads - log of etherpads...

: Doing what you're interested in! -- then it can hardly fail.
: What was missing in individually-based self-directed education?  How can peer support help?  What's missing from peer-to-peer education?  How can technology help?

Bekka Kahn (P2PU)
- Documentation management
- How to get feedback? vs "knowing what customers want"
: Viable alternatives to high-level stuff (Webcraft)
: Non-tech courses
: The "Course" idea: start date and end date?
: Digital Journalism course to create merged model
: Survey vs "Learning Analytics"

Laurian
- cyberpunk course this year
- A New Kind of Science (Wolfram) course? I need Joe :)

@Laurian: Would it be possible to set up an aggregator for #p2pu-* IRC chat logs?

Niels
- Is looking for a get stuff done day

User profiles, interests, timezones, being able to add useful things to your profile or other parts of the site <-- these were mentioned at other places in this pad
I added to of this issues to http://p2pu.lighthouseapp.com/projects/71002-lernanta. Please add the others to http://p2pu.lighthouseapp.com/projects/71983-technology, http://p2pu.lighthouseapp.com/projects/71002-lernanta, or http://p2pu.lighthouseapp.com/projects/71985-drupal depending on what they are related to.

General notes

Issue 1: For dyslexics, the content of the website is in your face.

There is a danger in answering: everybody dislikes the way content is presented. Andrew will come back and think about how information can be better presented.

Issue2: synchronicity iussues. A: I learn and perform best when there is interaction in real time. And it is difficult when people are in different time zones. Some courses suffer from a lack thereof.  http://p2pu.lighthouseapp.com/projects/71002-lernanta/tickets/4-timezones-support

There are degrees of interaction that courses take though. A: I find myself often overwhelmed by forum and mailling list communication.
Those spaces are indeed not really how people interact. But you can point out to course organisers that you can design a course according to the needs of the students that are drawn to yuor course, not necessarily according to the way you would like to teach that course.

Many to many communication is difficult.

Bekka: "There is nothing as crushing as the silence of the void. "
Taking stuff offline is possible. Bekka will set up the initial intro email for people who are interested in accessibility issues around the site (nice). Too much information, color.  J: there is a double sided sword/coin. Some of the issues need some more specific targetting. The point is we don't want to make too big changes to the website, but at the same time we really want to  do stuff that increases accessibility on either platform.
Bekka: There is actually a course on accesibility on p2pu. To me that means that we are really bad at documenting this stuff.

Joe:  For a lot of people the current p2pu website just doesn't make the usability cut. People have said this for a long time.
There are still problems with understanding what is being done.
An idea is to link the lists to the site, so people can see what is going on in general at p2pu.

Big Blue Button: One of stians professors said up a testing space for this. There must be reasons why organisers are not using stuff like this.
P2PU is open to all kind of tools.

It's not that the community doesnt know about the tools, it's more that the community doesn't know where to find this info. Also, knowing about the existence of the tools is not the same as knowing about best practices about what tools to use for what reason.

Andrew is happy that were taking on board comments.
