We fielded questions from new organizers with the help of previous organizers.
Q; How much of the course content has to be based on P2PU.org? Can I base learning materials (host) elsewhere?
A: It's good to have your course materials in one place (course pages), however if you host outside materials must be freely accessable and in an open space
Q: Does P2PU have a wiki
A: wiki.p2pu.org it's not hosted within p2pu.org --> PBwiki outside. put clear links to wiki work on the p2pu.org course page
Q: I have a question about people who might monopolize the conversation. I have a guy who signed up for my class and he's such a talker, I know him in real life, but I suspect that in a "chat" environment he will be manageable
Q: All course members register at p2pu, right?
Q:Can I ask any of you previous facilitators what was the most fun and most exciting element of some of your courses, things that surprised you in a good way?
? Dilemmas in Facilitating Online w/ Tony Carr
time: THURS Sept 2nd @ 12 Noon EST / 9 am PDT
location: http://www.tokbox.com/conf/tvhydepe9jbe1uvp

Background Task: Imagine that you are a course leader. You have sent an email to a few participants who have been very quiet for several days. One participant responds by saying:
Last week I participated in the discussion on the different online technologies, but I received almost no responses to the contributions I made. It felt like the other participants and the facilitator were talking over me and only with each other. I know I possibly know the least about the topic, but I really hate feeling excluded and am wondering if I want to continue with the course.
Think about your reply to this email and how you would solve the problem. Are there wider implications for how we can sustain and deepen connection and trust within our learning community?

Nathan Gandomi & Erin Knight from Berkeley iSchool lead meeting
Researching effective levels of engagement with participatory media
[After even more chaos we moved to: http://www.tokbox.com/conf/0dtwti3es3i6dox0]
We continued the meeting using slides from Erin & Nathan
See slides for reference:

- Blogs: one to many, + individual expression, -can be intimidating
- Forums: many-to-many, asynchronous, +flexibility, -respnse delay, -can get unweildy
- Wiki: +collaborative tool, -anyone can edit (vulnerable to innaccuracy) -attribution gets lost
- Social Bookmarking: +collaborative research, +repository, -difficult to ensure quality
- Chat: +synchronous,
Identify learning objectives and align them with participatory tools: http://wiki.p2pu.org/toolbox
Good practices
- Icebreakers are the best way to break ground in creating community!
- Model the expecte duse of the tools you choose
- Give feedback!
- Leave some "wiggle room" flexibility with these tools
Questions:
- Where did Erin & Nathan consuct their research?
@ USC Berkeley, many depts.
- Is there a way to handle attributions in wikis?
(unsure), revision history may be best way to track changes
- What tools & combinations are new designers using?
all designers seem to be using combinations of synchronous.asynchronous tools
- (Comment) let's collect useful "how-to's" in a community space as a resource for everyone
to be created!!
- Further questions can go to p2pu-new-courses@googlegroups.com

Questions/Comments
- What's the best way to organize synchronous meetings?
- [What are all the mailing lists about & appropriate meetings?]
- What is Barcelona all about?
- Have we reverted to the wiki as our platform
- Nope! The new site will be ready for courses next week and it's going to be awesome (http://p2pu.org)
- Is the sign-up task really necessary? Can an ambivalent drop out date be instiututed instead?
- Let's take this question to the community list (p2pu-community@googlegroups.com)
- There was lots of discussion around best practices for organizing meetings, finding open resources and vetting course participants - all answers to these questions can be found in the COURSE DESIGN HANDBOOK! (http://wiki.p2pu.org/Course-Design-Handbook)

- Una Daly - Working with Open textbooks and OER

Questions / Comments:
- I am not an expert - how important is it to be an expert?
- I want to take all the courses ...
- Questions around archival of resources
- Option to offer portfolios?
- Very basic features available now (user profile, and links to all courses a user takes) but still very basic (and, admittedly, not great). Will get better and open for suggestions.
- Can I upload files into the site? (Sure - technically yes, but non-open resources can't be shared through p2pu.org / also, in terms to make sure that anyone can access the resources it's good to focus on open resources)
- Una: In some cases, one might ask the copyright holder for licensing their works under a CC license. But that adds leadtime of course.
What are the goals of the orientation process?
- Help everyone run their courses, regardless the topic, the tools you want to use
- Alison will act as the front person - always available for questions
- Best place to raise questions and get support is to send to new-courses mailing list (´)
- We will look at different topics each week
- Week 1 ()
- Week 2 (Erin Knight) Objectives and Tool Alignment for peer engagement and collaboration
- Week 3 (Tony Carr): Tips and tricks around facilitation
