- P2PU has been involved with badges for awhile. Wrote seminal paper with Mozilla. Third iteration of badges was last year. Previous iteration had a gamified theory of learning that measured skills based on rubrics, someone got the badge based on an average rating. This was measured via usage on the site. Second implementation was very manual, so people didn't get a chance to experiment much. Conclusion: we were measuring the wrong thing. Usage with the site and average ratings don't capture learning. We wanted to capture the squishy stuff - how people help each other. So design priorities were based on this for third iteration.
- Four design values:
- Feedback - it's a kind of assessment. wanted to focus on qualitative feedback so people could improve. also work on project through number of steps - iteration
- Foster Mentorship relationships - so you know who gives you feedback. you can discover new projects through your mentorship
