- Blog posts you wrote
- Articles you read
- Initiatives you heard about
Key updates Super short updates about P2PU
- Exciting new courses to check out (Alison)
- Development priorities (Dirk)
- Release happened on 18 June
- Notification improvements
- John working on mechanical MOOC
- John specking out work for cohorts
- Course metrics probably now available. Dirk working on updating one feature, and then they'll be available from year-end onwards
- State of the mustard (Philipp)
- All green -> new users, comments up 5% from last month
- Good traffic from webmakers.org and (suspect) chronicle article
Agenda Core of the call. Focused on four types of conversations (invited guests, challenges you need help with, proposals you want feedback on, ideas you need collaborators for).
- Add your agenda items here. Provide a link to background materials you want the community to review prior to the call.
- Voice and Tone of P2PU
- Content Examples
- These are all "touchpoints" where people come in touch with P2PU, where users interface with us
- Opportunities for interactions to signal who we are
- We miss opportunities to show our values to new users
- Vanessa had been working on a voice and tone guideline set to help create a better interaction and expereince for our users.
- We need to consider their emotional state, and make them feel at ease.
- Our voice and tone is part of our pedagogical design.
- Consistent Voice & Tone:
- Questions:
- How would you use this document
- Everytime I write something, I reflect -> does it fit with our voice & tone?
- I want to revise the SoSI homepage and see how well this lines up (would love feedback)
- (Related to above comment) I want to revise a lot of the static text on the site, this will be brilliant help.
- Refer others to it to show them who we are (values are important, but this feels real)
- Vanessa: V&T - values reflected in language
- Use it to back up doing things one way instead of another
- Sip V&Ts when we watch the sunset in Berlin
- Definitely stick it up on the website
- What more would be needed from this document in order for it to be useful to you?
- if the language is actively in use on the site, then it will be in our minds as well, and we'll be more likely to use it
- Ali-->Inflecting our values into the places people put stuff (DEFINITELY, Ali)
- Dirk -> Any part of the site i work on, I'm practically-minded first, but people must feel free to give me a shout about the text, and offer suggestions for improvements.
- Vanessa -> I'm hoping that people use this when we're creating any copy for the site, including buttons, email notifications etc. This is a reference guide for everyone.
- Anyone with ideas of where on the site this would be most useful?
- Appear for people somehow after they've designed their first course/challenge/group? Part of the registration
- Knowledge Base for sure, and maybe a link from the About page
- VAnessa -> I'd like it to be inline help content as well, so that people know that the help resources we use are the ones for everyone, so we can model some of the content creation processes
- (jessy) need to balance tihs with being draconian about making people play things our way
- Dirk -> Concerned about how much we should/can tell people how to talk.
- Agreed, but these can be presented as "helpful consideration for the content of your course" or something like that.
- Vanessa -> We can also "smile" upon this kind of usage
- tension btw homogeniety and creativity? subversively encourage ppl 2 use language doesn't undermine that tension?
- P: We're gonna fall into lockstep? No intention of that ... does good job of describing core community ... ppl invested in p2pu this is how we communicate
- it's ok if folks decide not 2 join us b/c of this ...
- still have flexibility for new voices ... can adapt
- Bekka: Guardian newspaper ... guardian style guide referred 2 all the time
- guide is right there on the website ... ppl commenting can find it?
- Don't put voice & tone 2 front and center b/c then it's too prescriptive
- better if ppl have 2 look 4 it a little
- We share, we don't shove+1+1+1+1+1
- Research Sessions in Berlin
- Berliners (Pfannkuchen): Come with a P2PU-oriented research question!
- Away team: Be thinking about a P2PU-oriented research question!
- The Open Masters program
- Brief intro from Alan about team and what's happening. Follow or participate on the blog: http://www.openmastersprogram.com/
- evolved from the discussion around a Masters in Social Innovation
- Plan to launch in the fall
- Open admission
- Open topics
- Open peer-review on completion
- 8 other people working on it mainly in the DC area
- 50% of the people who filled in the participation survey said they were looking for a communty/network
- The handbook in process: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1vUVgaqQqXGDbjZSixkh5aT7OBlsz7ZBChmyMYLZ18_0/edit
- PLan is to create all sorts of content - badges, forms of recognition, etc
- Your questions.
- Can we frame as a P2PU Labs project? Lots of partners, what's the role for P2PU? Our leadership seems a little diluted.
- Alan -> I present myself as a member of the P2PU community who is supported by P2PU.
- Can we add P2PU logo to open masters site? Supported by ...
- This is presented as a framework that created by people who work for a lot of great orgs, rather than something that is driven by one particular org
- Need to talk about what it means to sign an MOU as a member of the P2PU community within the projects between the partners
- Q on the floor - are we up for organizing a P2PU cohort to do this together, and at what stage?
- Good idea
- I would love to see P2PU seen as driving this more - funding through Schools mini-grant
- Is this in any way similar to Allison's handmade masters? http://www.grungefarmer.org/handmade-masters.html
- From the handbook: "Pass the one-month open peer review process. You may ask for this review from the global Open Masters community as soon as you feel that you are ready- and as many times as you want, after that- until you successfully complete it."--can you see a bit about what you envision the open peer review process to be?
- Mechanical MOOCS and headless MOOCs and flash MOOCs! (jessy)
- omg we have so many moocs
- kind of just want an update, since there was discussion under one name (headless) and now under another (mechanical)
- love the idea of doing some experimental learning formats, so would like to coordinate on that if possible
- Headless MOOCS and Mechanical MOOCS are the same thing (that's up there with the oddest sentences I have ever written) :)
- This is what we are building -> http://pad.p2pu.org/lab-project-mit +1
- Not totally public yet
- Let's discuss ;-)
- Mashup:
- John's Let's Talk TED Talks idea
- Steve Carson's idea to run really low-tech MOOCs with MIT OCW materials
- The Daily Lit model
- First effort w/super simple bare bones structure
- No config, no representation for collaboration yet,it's super conceptual at the moment
- going to organize in small cohorts
- Mockups ->
- Jessy -> there was an off-list discussion which took place about some of this stuff, so there is a bit of frustration in terms of the efforts not matching up
- The paint on this isn't even dry yet (the mockups are 2 days old)
- And pretty specific goals to use email for synchronization
- Should the discussion about the mechanical mooc happen offline?
General discussion and questions
- Anything else that just needs to be said out loud
- Answering Help Desk Questions On Time
- turn around slow
- more eyes needed on help desk, dirk is still one man show
- More staff presence needed! *Bekka hangs head in shame* (VMG will step up her game)
- If you can't answer it, make sure it gets queued for the right person
- Alan looking for feedback (on call or offline) about:
