- BK Who is blogging next week?
- Problems
- Badge project had some contracting issues
- Ideas/Other
Discussion
- What if People Create Bad Badges?
- Moderate badges?
- Let the bad badge sink to the bottom - natural selection? Yep
- Create a system that only allows good badges
- What makes a badge "bad"?
- Poorly-defined badges (other other problems) will make the badge less desireable, will eventually fade away, I think
- Spammy badges
- Joe Schmoe creates a P2PU badge and gives it to all his friends (who are douchebags). They run around the web displaying their P2PU badges, which point to totally meaningless work.
- is there P2PU "branding" for badges? <- Good way to protect P2PU (no "P2PU badge" unless we are involved)
- Probably too early to share this (if that's possible, not really) but a visual designer is working with me on badges for the Open Science course...with P2PU colors scheme worked in
- We don't allow any user with the username "Joe Schmoe" to create badges <- That's a given
- We require badge creators to get a tatoo of the badge, that way we know they create badges they care about
- Devalue badges - Make it clear that a badge doesn't hold intrinsic value (value is associated with the work behind the badge and the community that reviewed it)
- A badge is created for something totally rediculous - you are a cat poster (posted a cat picture on a forum)
- A badge is created with no way to verify work?
- What about the "evidence URL", linking back to the work. If it's not clickable, it'll be worth much less, so the "good" badges can be noticed.
- A badge is created, with a rubric that is very easy to work through. Loads of people complete the required tasks, but there is a bottleneck in awarding the badge, which is a meaningless marker anyway. Now people are pissed off that they didn't get a pointless badge and are complining loudly and publicly
- Should a centralized place for discussion around badges be created? or would that fragment things (the discussion about particular badges/courses) more?
- Someone creates a general badge with a good idea behind it but then establishes a bad community around it.
- like create a general 'open contributors source badge', but then get very picky about who gets the badge?
- Someone creates 100s of badges.
- Someone creates a cat badge and it goes viral
- The "Official P2PU quality contributor" badges is created by someone we don't even know
- this brings the idea of P2PU vetted or endorsed/approved badges...

Hey Leah
How are you?
Leah MacVie
3:55 PM
I hope Dirk shows up so I can solve my issue!!
Things are good- Plugging away at Open Badges 102- but Peter seems to be having more luck than I at his course. That's OK- it'll get done.
me
3:55 PM
Yes, he should do - haven't heard otherwise from him
Let us know how we can help!
Leah MacVie
3:56 PM
OK- sounds great. It's just that one tiny issue for now... not being able to edit the description.
me
3:57 PM
I can see how that might be frustrating
Leah MacVie
3:58 PM
Yeah- it's alright. I have a feeling it might be because the course was half in beta and half in the old system. Dirk will know....or he will have to just edit the description for me! haha
