Discussion
Engaging the Community at P2PU
- Currently most community activity happens on the mailing list (and some in blog comments)
- That's not entirely awesome:
- Not enough "open" (not everyone knows about stuff that is going on, etc.)
- Not enough "personality" (avatars, profiles, etc.)
- Not enough "conversations" (new ideas, critique, etc.)
- New people aren't finding their way into the community via the mailing list (because the mailing list doesn't let you see who we are)
- Philipp's Question: Do we need to consider using Discourse - an open source discussion platform?
- Between Mechanical MOOC and Learning Creative Learning, over 30,000 new people have touched P2PU that haven't found their way to the mailing list.
- What is the ask we should make to them to engage further?
- IMHO At the moment, these are 2 totally seperate communities, who we treat and speak to very differently.
- I'd be interested to know how many of them even know that p2pu is running the MOOC they're signed up for.
- It would be amazing to bring them in, but I think the ask is very different.
- Would it make sense to move to discourse? http://www.discourse.org/ (it's open source and pretty awesome)
- Host it ourselves? Yes, we can host it ourselves (there will also be a hosted solution in the future, which costs money, but maybe more cost-effective)
- How to decide?
- Change the way we use the mailing list instead of moving to a new tool?
- Would this help us grow community?
- Surface cool stuff that is happening?
- Make P2PU more open/accessible?
- What are the risks? Not enough conversations? Forums will go stale?
- A more robust sense of engagement: http://cl.ly/NXwV (screenshot of discourse)
- Richer integration of media: http://cl.ly/NXc2 (screenshot of discourse)
- Oh no, another platform to sign up for! ..
- Proposal (VMG): Try it out
- +1 x2
- Tiger team: Jane, Bekka, Vanessa, Philipp
- (Optional discussion) P2PU homepage could have three sections -> News (blog), Community (forum), Learning (courses/schools/badges)+1
- Good way to fuse P2PU labs + P2PU Community + p2pu.org
- Also a good way for course creators to promote their courses to core community--form a stronger bond there
- VMG: user research showed that people are confused where to go (making that more clear is a good idea)
Bekka is focusing on a stronger research / documentation role. We want to start publishing the P2PU Lab Reports series: great looking, insightful reports on open and peer learning.
- Newcomer: Sara (sara@salientresearch.net, @salientresearch, @commoer) suggests updating P2PU article on Wikipedia. Now added to Communicate OER content list, which class will be reviewing.
