- Link to calendar
- Ideas (on the horizon)
Discussion
- Managing our own time / getting things done
- Bekka did a timekeeping experiment. 65% spent fielding email
- Q: Is that a bad thing? We live online, we are virtual, email is important.
- BK: I don't think so necessarily.
- PS: I don't totally disagree, I think it depends on what you're doing with the email
- Working out of the inbox is reactive, not proactive (not always - i get a lot of proactive stuff done via email sometimes :) - but everyone works differently! also i don't work *for* p2pu) - "Working out of the inbox" not "using email"
- Pros/Cons of working out of your inbox
- How can we improve our use of email -> http://hbswk.hbs.edu/archive/4438.html
- Manage email to not feel overwhelmed, or let email dictacte your day
- We have different workflows that affect how we use email:
- Some of the workflow is driven by the needs of our positions (Bekka will do more email than others, Philipp will be in more meetings...)
- VMG takes a few minutes each morning to draw and write and set out some goals for the day
- Sherry Turkle - Notification obsessed culture, feeling that we have to answer all emails, has something to do with our perceived "needs"
- VMG is not owned by email
- Proposal: Each of us to do personal timekeeping for a week to see how we are spending our time
- Mick: Many people are "slaves" to email. That's kind of the technology we use predominantly. When deciding to ignore some messages, I differentiate between community messages (which I try to answer 100%) and other messages
- Billy: No secret recipe. Hopelessly addicted(!). Need to put the phone into a different room and close email browser.
- Jane: I don't own a smartphone. I get more stuff done.
- VMG: Will share some tools I came across in Mitch Resnick's class.
- Research at P2PU
- Bekka's role / Vanessa's role
- Vanessa interact with researchers, talks to them, helps develop the project, while Bekka does more of the report writing
- Vanessa: Leads research, in-house, as well as collaborating with research partners
- Bekka: Leads Lab Reports series (writing, consolidating, editing, publishing)
- VMG: Limited time to help others, some clear requirements for research partners, goal is to find fewers but stronger partners
- OER fellowships with OU UK
- Jane: we will have some say in the creation of the research questions
- yes i asked Beck question about what the 10k pounds cover - could we use it towards a workshop for SOO organizers (under the guise of research)? she hasn't got back yet
- Could be research on collaborative improvement / remixing of courses=OER through a workshop
- original idea was to fund research travel - right, we should probably discuss what we want to do there. what would benefit p2pu/soo the most.
- They are hewlett funded, as are we, so there is a space for working together on this.
- Jane: I think the research they are doing will be directly useful to what we do.
- Research partnerships with academics can be tricky. We are an unusual partner.
- Mick: We have the same problem at FLOSS Manuals. We've been scaring researchers off. Which is good, because we end up not spending time on it. But it's bad, because more reseachers would be useful. Would be interested in tactics on this. Learning how to speak the same langauge is important
- Open Learning Hackathon @ MIT Media Lab
- Part of the open learning theme ->DML->MacArthur
- April 5-7
- 15-20 people who have built things that are NOT moocs
- Building projects/ prototoypes
- Fostering community
- Weaving everything into a positive narrative of alternatives to MOOCs
- Video documentation
