Discussion
- Strategy Discussion (final live discussion pre board meeting)
- Goal of the conversation:
- Clarify (still not clear what all of this means)
- Add detail / make it concrete
- Comments/ Discussion
- Dirk: Are we leaving back doors to keep doing stuff we are doing currently? (esp. showcase and small R&D)
- It's easy to slip in a lot of stuff here. It feels like this could be quite a bit. Too much maybe.
- Carl: I added a section called "what is the offering" which is a way for us to make sure that we know what this is and what it isn't so there is transparency and we're all comfortable.
- Erika: everything feels like its lingering, and we haven't said anything concrete about anything, so I guess I'm waiting for the second half of the call
- Carl: Let's look at the What is the offering / What is the product section together to make this more concrete
- Vanessa: What I love is the emphasis on showcase projects (new tools, we get to play, we stay relevant)
- But also raises questions about maintenance and longevity. How do we balance showcase piece with longevity and sustainability?
- Jane: social and open learning are used interchangeably, and they're both vague, so some clarity on that would be good.
- Carl: there are 2 bits to this: the what is it, what is the organisation, stripped of judgement and the hows and the specifics.
- The second document is the how, including how we do it and how do we feel about it.
- A really useful conversation at thsi point is to see if there is general consensus on this document, and look at the other 2 concrete sections which is how we pivot into this, and think about priorities.
- Might be helpful to think of this vision as being a Hub (plus)
- This vision has a central role for the website and the resources, capturing the reporting and expertise documentation
- Hub + means a central role for knowledge resources and courses, and branching out from that are the showcase projects
- Showcase vs experiments
- Showcase is for stories about things other people do
- Experiments are things we do (that move us a BIG step forward)
- What does the focus on "Novices" mean?
- Novices are people interested p2p learning online (not people totally new to online learning) - NEED TO CONFIRM WE ALL AGREE ON THIS
- Audience is still people who want to run courses online
- People interested in facilitating learning online (and not supporting the learners directly)
- JP: That doesn't come through at all
- JP: I do like that focus. Needs to be more clear in the doc. I like it because when I keep thinking back to why I joined P2PU - it's because it allowed me to connect with people who were doing that.
- BK: I like that focus, too, but need to be clear that we don't think of them as the random people who show up. But people like the School of Open facilitators. People we talk to. People with whom there is interaction. There is more stickiness.
- PS: Need to do both probably. I think of it more as a continuum.
- VMG: I like the focus on open learning methods. I'll work on some proposed definitions.
- PS: Three values not up for discussion. P2P, Open (defined in the values), Community
- Course Feedback & Suggestions check-in: https://trello.com/b/AxNhy4Ey/feedback-and-suggestions
- Archiving courses - progress?
- Badges language - Progress?
- School of Open landing page - next steps?
- Translation process - next steps?
- Course faciltators feedback specific to p2pu.org (if you want to see all feedback in depth: http://pad.p2pu.org/p/school-of-open-course-feedback )
- Badges
- 3 fields in form - didn't really follow, did our own thing. feedback varies by project, so just linked to feedback already put elsewhere
- inability to edit feedback/contributions after the fact seems inflexibile
- separate platform for badges seems complicated and was confusing for some participants (it not showing up in actual course)
- Disqus does not work. can we find something better? (manually sign up for notifications, separate from course ux, just didn't work for some people for some reason)
- needs for a messaging/discussion board for courses: something like Wikipedia's Talk page but simpler. something that facilitates discussion versus just posting of comments. something that facilitates posting of longer messages in this way. Google group is one option but it's another barrier b/c people have to create an account, sign in, and then the google group isn't always obvious that its a forum/discussion board
- Etherpad - stopped working at some point. will this be an ongoing issue?
- Microsoft Explorer - still having issues with it not working for teachers. Explorer is the only thing teachers can use at many schools in AU or US, b/c firefox/chrome is blocked in the institution. How to resolve?
