Communication Plan
For Learners & Mentors:
- WHY? What's the motive? Why should I start or join a study group?
- HOW? How do I do it? What are the steps in the process?
For Us
Theory and Plan
1) Convert traffic to sign-ups
2) Convert sign-ups into STARTING or JOINING study groups, and inviting their friends
3) People in those study groups create questions and complete learning tasks
4) That lead to assessments and badges
5) Those people now have more credibility and social capital. They become leaders and mentors who create new study groups. In a cyclical process that scales.
Revised Metrics
Original roadmap
Q1 - 1000 learners (Courses: Opportunity-driven)
Q2 - 2000 learners (Courses: Prioritization)
Q3 - 4000 learners (Courses: Diversity & Excellence)
Q4 - 10000 learners (Courses: Full spectrum)
Why Re-Boot?
- Challenges to original model:
- Instructor led: Instructors don't scale as easily as demand
- Fixed course cycles: create long stretches where no courses are open for sign-up
- Solutions:
- Strengthen incentives to facilitators (reputation benefits)
- Lower barriers to participation (learners and facilitators) by allowing more flexible "study groups" in addition to courses
- Allow courses and groups to start at any time, not tied to fixed cycles
Re-boot
- Platform: Build the more flexible model into Lernanta (based on Batucada)
- Support: Provide support scaffolding, helpdesk
- Promotion: Strengthen social media promotion for individual courses and groups
Implications for original roadmap:
- Lower the goals for Q2 (number of overall users still ok, but active learners lower)
- New model is designed to allow faster scaling of community
- Consider both peripheral (low activity = "user") and active learners in growth planning
- Expect to be back on track by end Q3, and hit similar level of ambition as intended for Q4
Timeline & Metrics
Q2 (Migration, and launch phase)
- May: 15 study groups/ courses, 300 active learners, 500 new users in community
- June: 25 study groups/ courses, 500 active learners, 1000 new users in community
Q3 (Scale up the new model)
- Per month: +10-15 groups/courses, +250 active learners, +5000 new users
- 70 groups/courses, 1500 active learners, 15,000 users
Q4 (Return to roadmap projections)
- 150 groups/courses, 3000 active learners, 50,000 users
