Goal:
- Present and discuss (critique) vision for SoSI in 2012 and leave with action steps
- The time is right to do some potentially BIG things with SoSI
- The way I know how to do that is to think about sustainability
- If positive feedback, would love to spend 80% of my time on this
- Update and brief proposal of 2012 projects:
- Proposed Project 1 - Run the world's largest courses on Social Innovation in 2012, designed by students for students - preview the proposal in this blurb going out in the Ashoka U Newsletter: https://docs.google.com/document/d/14draLFVnH-QJWVFnVbGuL98Vg62RFcK4xNWYKowJo-U/edit?userstoinvite=jessica@oneworldyouthproject.org&pli=1
- Inspired by the AI and Machine Learning courses at Stanford
- What they did well is to do something *big* and innovative
- Led to question -> What could we do that would be media worthy / attention worthy?
- There is lots of interest in social innovation in general
- Model:
- Recruit students to help design the course
- Support as an official Ashoka U project - through a network of local groups
- Define start-date and end-date but flexibility in between
- Centrally offered seminars and adaptable curricula
- Local groups are responsible to running the course locally
- Ask: Be a participant / Launch a local course
- Ashoka U can help universities offer this for credit
- Find sponsors to support individual tracks within this
- Recruit teams to work on content areas - only move forward if find teams and faculty sponsors
- Do an event at Ashoka U meeting in 2012 that brings together the teams
- Feedback:
- Great idea
- Consider challenges
- What's needed to get off the ground?
- Funding from Ashoka U? Answer: Not really possible - but they might be able to help put us in touch with people who can fund
- Question is if we should do something small to prototype or aim big
- Next steps
- Advertising goes out to Ashoka U today
- Doing a call at the end of the month
- Trying to sign up volunteers
- If first step successful - will apply for micro-grant to cover time/ expenses
- Proposed Project 2 - Courses that start at conferences. Replicable revenue generating model.
- First P2PU SoSI course is still the most successful
- Based around local teams - working in their own local context
- Presented at a conference to create some excitement
- Then offered an opportunity for participants to get involved
- Formed relationship face-to-face during the conference
- Model is:
- Offer as service to conference organizers who want to replicate this model
- Recruit course organizers 2 months before through a webinar
- Work with them before the conference
- Speak at the conference
- Lead a workshop to help organizers get ideas and recruit participants
- Examples:
- Ashoka U Exchange
- Compass Partners Conference
- Global Business School Network Conference
- Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs Conference
- SoCap Conference
- Bioneers
- US Social Justice Forum
- SXSW
- TED
- Question:
- Are there other people at P2PU interested in doing this (or something similar)?
- How soon do we make the big push on this?
- Do I pick a few smaller conferences to try this out? Or go big?
- Potential to use this model also just to get the word out (we should consider doing this for other areas - and get P2PU staff and volunteers involved)
- Pitched this idea to 40-50 people and everyone responds positively
- What can make this fail?
- Sponsorship issues - how much can we promote corporate sponsors (if we don't like them)?
- Running a really bad course with lots of attention - social innovation space is small enough that word will get around
- Not having someone really drive this (feel ownership, wake up in the morning worrying about making it awesome)
- Next steps
- Alan - Make project plans with milestones
- How much tech development needed?
- Define "sponsorship" guidelines (what do sponsors get for their money / or contribution?)
- Alan - Micro-grant pitch to get funding needed to get it off the ground
- Alan - Make a proposal to set up SoSI officially as a partnership between Citizen Circles and P2PU
- Alan - Document all of this well, so other school organizers can do similar things
- Alan - Schedule a meeting with all school people (and others interested in speaking at conferences to start courses)
- Alan - Contact karen specifically about the income generation ideas
- Alan/John - Speak with John about a product offer for this (prize, service, etc.)
- How much can we charge for something like this?
- Alan's friend was hired for something similar -> USD 5000
- Questions
- Logistics Plan (advice from experience of others)
- Integrating into P2PU Communication Flow?
- Tech dev needs
- Grouping cloned courses
- Pages for partners
- Times for meetings
- Change type of thing a task is
- Take responsibility for tasks
- Preloading tasks lists
- Funding the legwork
- Relationship of Citizen Circles
- Actions - Next Steps
